CLIMATE & WEATHER
The islands offer different experiences depending on when you visit.
Weather and nature is ever changing and beautiful year around.
Humid sub tropical climate
Bonin Islands sits on the boundary between a humid sub tropical climate and a tropical monsoon climate. Generally speaking the islands are cooler than mainland Japan in the summer and warmer in the winter. While the temperature seldom go much higher than 30 degrees in summer, the high humidity and strong sunlight is a factory that must be carefully observed.

WEATHER AND CLIMATE
The narrow temperature range makes for a warm climate all year with occasional typhoon visits.
May and September/October sees the most rainfall, but even during those months there are many sunny days.
The winters are fair with low precipitation, especially January and February are dry but temperature rarely goes below 10 degrees Celsius even at night. The oceans surrounding the islands lack a distinct ocean circulation, and the islands are reached by both the northward-moving North Equatorial circulation and the southward-moving Japan Kuroshio current.

TYPHOONS
Typhoons, or tropical cyclones, are frequent in the Pacific Ocean south from the islands.
They sometimes come close to, or hit the islands. During such occasions villagers may board up windows and take other security precautions to avoid damage to property and buildings. Please listen to the instructions given by your lodging to stay out of danger.
While it is rare, the Ogasawara Maru may also alter its sailing schedule to avoid severe weather and to reduce the chance of discomfort for passengers falling ill due to rough seas. In case any change is made, all effort will be put into communicating this to ticket holders and everyone on the Islands.
!! BE CARFUL OF THE SUN !!
The UV rays on Bonin Islands are about 7 times stronger than in mainland Tokyo due to the proximity to the equator.
Please take care to cover your skin and/or apply sunblock to avoid getting burned.
Protecting your skin with clothing is often more effective than sunblock.
!! Please avoid any sunblock containing oxybenzone & octinoxate as it damages marine life !!
