Beaches

Explore the wide range of beautiful beaches on the islands

FIND YOUR BEACH

Several beautiful beaches are spread out over the island, and many of them offer convenient access and toilets, benches and sometimes showers. There are also more remote alternatives if you like to explore and combine your day with hiking.

Some beaches offer great snorkeling, and some are more suited than others for families.  Please note that a few beaches are close to strong currents, so make sure you know what area is safe before entering the water.

MIYANOHAMA BEACH

A calm beach next to Miyanohama bay with easy access via road. There are tables and chairs with shade available and we recommend going there during high tide.

WARNING: The strong currents between the islands run just outside of the swimming area. Please stay safe and never swim past the bouy.

TSURIHAMA BEACH

This stone beach is a local favourite spot for snorkeling. Turtles, reef sharks and a good variety of fish can often be seen here. The coral is also varied and beautiful. Note that it is slightly difficult to enter during low tide as the beach is rocky. Not recommended for children.

WARNING: The strong currents between the islands run just outside of the swimming area. It is extremely dangerous to go past the bouys. NEVER GO PAST THE BOUYS!

OHMURA BEACH

Right next to the central village and the main bay, this wide sand beach is a nice place to lounge, swim or walk along. The shops and resturants are close by and you can see the boats come and go from here. Great for families.

SAKAIURA BEACH

Sakakiura beach is an easy accessible beach via either bus, car, bike or walking from the central village. It offers great snorkeling out to the WW2 wreck Hinko maru and has public toilets & showers available. Great for families and people who want to take it slow in the beautiful environment.

OGIURA BEACH

A great beach for families and watching the sunset. A small park with tables and roof shade sit right at the beachfront. Equipped with toilets & showers this long sand beach offers plenty of space to set up your own spot.

HATSUNEURA BEACH

This sand beach requires a hard hike to reach and can be tough in hot weather. Going down takes about 45 minutes and up is about 1 hour. The descent is very steep partly, rain or bad weather can make access a challenge. Due to its remoteness, it can sometimes be susceptible to debris and trash accumulated from the ocean. Always bring ample supply of water if you attempt this hike.

KOPEPE BEACH

A small and beautiful beach with toilets and tables with shade close to the water. Some rare corals can be seen here and it is a great place to go swimming or snorkeling. This is also a beach used for Kayak tours towards Minamijima.

There is a hiking path leading to Kominato beach in the far end. Note that the hike is partly very steep.

KOMINATO BEACH

A wide sand beach next to a small rive mouth overlooking a beautiful bay. The water is often calm here and the sunsets can be enjoyed from the beach. This is where the hiking path to the remote southern beaches (Buta Beach & John Beach) and mountain trails start.

Note that the car parking & shower for Kominato is a 10 min walk away from the beach entrance. Bikes and scooters can park closer to the beach where there is also a bus stop.

BUTA BEACH

Buta beach is a small beach located after hiking over the Nakayamatoge ridge offering excellent views of both the island and the ocean. The hike takes about 45 minutes from the trail head at Kominato and includes a fairly steep incline and decline.

WARNING: There are no toilets, facilities or water sources once you start your hike from Kominato area. Make sure you have plenty to drink and are equipped for the hike.

JOHN BEACH

This remote beach requires a longer hike over mountains and in forests terrain via Buta beach. It should only be attempted in suitable weather and with generous supply of water. One way hike takes about 2-3 hours depending on your speed and energy. You can also take a detour up to the peak of Takayama for some great views of both the island, Minamijima and the sea.

WARNING: During peak summer season this hike is very demanding and hikers often experience problems due to heat stroke and dehydration.

JINNY BEACH

This beach is only accessible via boat.
It is a small pristine and stunningly beautiful sand beach with a direct view towards Minamijima and the turquoise ocean between the small islands. You can get here either by joining a kayaking tour or some boat cruises to Minamijima.

WARNING:  The current between this beach and Minamijima can be very strong, please be careful if you enter the water.
